Teach A Man to Fish

Have you ever heard the saying, "Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can have food for a lifetime"? I have learned that this saying greatly applies to food assistance. Do not get me wrong, food assistance is a GREAT THING. However, there should be some degree of educational resources that are available along with the food. By giving an individual a recipe or some serving suggestions, the individual can better utilize the food resources they have been given.

This was my challenge for much of the week. I have created three blog posts and a recipe handout. With a technical background in nutrition, I found many challenges in removing the technical components and making the nutrition information fun. The recipe handout is for individuals receiving commodity food assistance. I was able to learn Food Tracker as a way to analyze nutrition information and generate a Nutrition Facts label. The challenge of finding recipes for the specific ingredients that were easy to make and involved minimal ingredients proved to be fun and rewarding!
